I just picked up the same thing, but for the kitchen. It's more of a honing tool, since it's too fine to do any major work on an edge... but perfect to maintain an edge.
no way would I bring that on a trip, however, since it's so heavy - but you can get those little 'V' honing/sharpening plastic kits to use in a pinch. They usually can come out, and be used to hone fishing hooks, too.
